Fathers as Nurturers?
Mr Barack Obama couldn't have said it better. And I quote: 'Any fool can have a child. That doesn't make you a father, he said. It's the courage to raise a child that makes you a father.' In a speech made before his congregation, this American Presidential candidate, touches on an observation about black fathers' absence from their children's lives. I think this is not only happening among black Americans. I believe this is slowly happening globally. Although a father's traditional role is to be the family provider, isn't he also expected to help nurture his child or his children? I have heard many fathers say that nurturing is not their primary obligation and point to mothers to fulfill that role. Precisely why, most come home from work, seemingly tired and exhausted, expected to be left alone to rest. Usually, mothers shield fathers away from the day-today humdrum of family living.
