I need to get tested

I don't like hospitals. My last stay in the hospital was when I had a kidney biopsy. And it was physically draining and emotionally disappointing. I guess I will never be able to forget the circumstances surrounding this biopsy. It somehow gave me, sad to say but true; an ominous indication of what my future would be like in the hands of people around me. It was an eye opener. That was 5 years ago but remembering it today, doesn't make it any less painful, here in my heart. I am sorry a tear fell. Courage is the mark of a true lady. I should be beyond the ghosts of my past. There's only today and tomorrow, hopefully :-) And I need to get tested again for the following: 1. T3 T4 TSH Ultrasound for my Thyroid Gland 2. ECG 3. Chest X-ray 4. Glucose (Fasting) PP Blood Urea Nitrogen Creatinine Blood Uric Acid Total Cholesterol Triglycerides HDL LDL Sodium Potassium 5. RBC WBC Hemoglobin Hematocrit Differential

Fathers as Nurturers?

Mr Barack Obama couldn't have said it better. And I quote: 'Any fool can have a child. That doesn't make you a father, he said. It's the courage to raise a child that makes you a father.' In a speech made before his congregation, this American Presidential candidate, touches on an observation about black fathers' absence from their children's lives. I think this is not only happening among black Americans. I believe this is slowly happening globally. Although a father's traditional role is to be the family provider, isn't he also expected to help nurture his child or his children? I have heard many fathers say that nurturing is not their primary obligation and point to mothers to fulfill that role. Precisely why, most come home from work, seemingly tired and exhausted, expected to be left alone to rest. Usually, mothers shield fathers away from the day-today humdrum of family living. Do not disturb the master please. So what happens if he sudde

Blogging for health?

I have always felt that positively expressing oneself is one way for an individual to control or manage stress. It happened to me. My life was totally stressed out because of an illness. Although my nephrologist suggested I read 'A Purpose Driven Life', a book that suggests that including God in ones life eventually leads a person to find the true meaning of his/her existence; it was not enough. Though t he book did open my eyes to many of my human failings - failings that led me in the beginning to be even more depressed, feeling helpless and alone, I was consoled. My stress emanates from the countless emotional, mostly anger issues, that needed to be aired. It wasn't really about my illness. And then blogging. This post of the olden days attests to that. After recently reading Joan Joyce's link about the therapeutic effect of blogging, I was pleasantly reminded, that I was in the right direction after all. It is an admitted fact, blogging gave me an opportu

Part 3 Causes of Lower back pain

Here, discussed are the uncommon causes of backpain : 1. Paget's disease of bone Paget's disease of the bone is a condition of unknown cause in which the bone formation is out of synchrony with normal bone remodeling. This condition results in abnormally weakened bone and deformity and can cause localized bone pain. Paget's disease is more common in people over the age of 50. Heredity (genetic background) and certain unusual virus infections have been suggested as causes. Thickening of involved bony areas of the lumbar spine can cause the radiating lower extremity pain of sciatica. Paget's disease can be diagnosed on plain x-rays. However, a bone biopsy is occasionally necessary to ensure the accuracy of the diagnosis. Bone scanning is helpful to determine the extent of the disease, which can involve more than one bone area. A blood test, alkaline phosphatase, is useful for diagnosis and monitoring response to therapy. 2. Bleeding or infection in the pelvis

Part 2 of Things to know about lower back pain

6. Congenital bone conditions Congenital causes (existing from birth) of low back pain include scoliosis and spina bifida. Scoliosis is a sideways (lateral) curvature of the spine that can be caused when one lower extremity is shorter than the other ( functional scoliosis) or because of an abnormal design of the spine (structural scoliosis). Children who are significantly affected by structural scoliosis may require treatment with bracing and/or surgery to the spine. Adults infrequently are treated surgically but often benefit by support bracing. 7. Spina bifida Is a birth defect in the bony vertebral arch over the spinal canal, often with absence of the spinous process. This birth defect most commonly affects the lowest lumbar vertebra and the top of the sacrum. Occasionally, there are abnormal tufts of hair on the skin of the involved area. Spina bifida can be a minor bony abnormality without symptoms. However, the condition can also be accompanied by serious nervous abnormalitie
